The SPCA is a place of safety for animals who face abuse and neglect. It is an organisation that acts as the voice for those who cannot speak for themselves.
However, the running of the SPCA relies heavily on the generosity of the community. To raise extra funds, the SPCA runs a boarding facility to house residents’ animals when they go on vacation.
On Saturday, December 8, Newcastle Lions Club made it their mission to help the SPCA. Hosting a Fun Dog Walk and a Fun Dog Show at the Snips Christmas Market, the club managed to raise funds for the SPCA. Funds that will go towards upgrading the boarding facilities.

With the opportunity to spend time with their four-legged companions, Newcastillians rose to the occasion to support the initiative.

“Considering the weather conditions, there was a good response. The participants enjoyed it,” says Newcastle Lions Club President, Zarina Luck.
Despite the weather conditions, the dogs enjoyed the Fun Walk, which was divided into a 1km and 2km division.
This was followed by the Fun Dog Show. A segment of the day’s fun, where dog owners took a step back. Allowing their dogs to strut their stuff and showcase what makes them truly special.
With an array of prizes up for grabs and the opportunity to interact with other animal lovers, the day was thoroughly enjoyed.
“We will be looking at doing it again in the future,” says Luck.

Through the funds raised at the event, Newcastle Lions Club can now help make a positive contribution to the welfare of Newcastle’s animals.
“We are grateful for the participants of the events. A special thanks also goes out to the ladies from the Lions Club,” says Heather Gero of Newcastle SPCA.
Gero adds that through the efforts of the Newcastle Lions Club and the participants from the event, the SPCA can now focus on upgrading its boarding facilities. “This will help improve the income and assist us in doing what we do, in helping the animals of the community,” she concludes.
Well done to the Newcastle Lions Club and the community for doing their part in assisting the SPCA.
