Newcastle film company shines with highly anticipated movie!

The cinematic world is one of glamour and intrigue, often linked to Hollywood or South Africa’s larger cities.

However, Newcastle is no stranger to movies. This all thanks to Langelihle Film Productions, a film company which is putting Newcastle on the map in more ways than one.

“This year, we have produced three films. The one film was done predominantly in Gauteng, with 40% being filmed in Newcastle. But, the film Umhlola is solely Newcastle. From its location, straight down to the cast,” says Thulani Mbatha, owner of Langelihle Film Productions.

The main actors are Phumeile Shabangu, Sbusiso Mweli, 10-year-old Snakhokonke Mlambo, Busi Mlambo, Gugu Mdlozi, Grimre Mazibuko, Tshwe Mavuso and Monhlanhla Gama and Sfiso Mnjomezulu.

“A lot of the cast weren’t actors and I had to give them some training. But, everyone did a great job,” explains Thulani.

The movie has already aired on Channel 164 and will air again on Wednesday, October 24, at 7 pm on Channel 164.

But what is the movie about?

Thulani explains the movie is set in the 1800s, prior to the colonial era. “There are no cars, no electricity and the wardrobe is animal skins.”

The storyline revolves around a lost tribe which holds the secret to vast wealth. Those who resurrect the tribe will then acquire this wealth. However, one elderly woman knows how to bring it back and she is killed for her knowledge.

However, her spirit returns in the body of a young girl to expose the wrongdoings of her murderers and become a queen.

This is a movie not to be missed, be sure to tune in this Wednesday to see local talent in action.

Thulani says this is not the only movie to be filmed in Newcastle. Langelihle is currently busy finalising two more films. “They will be aired next month, but I still need to confirm the exact date.”

One of the films is called The Painter (Umapenda), which revolves around a young man who pretends to be someone he isn’t and is eventually exposed as a fake, before finding his feet in the world.

Thulani is thrilled with his three films, which exposes local talent and portrays realistic storylines, captivating the hearts and imagination of viewers.

“Last year, we filmed seven films. Five of them were identified by South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTA). I really felt honoured as SAFTA is one of the biggest boards in the industry in South Africa.”

Thulani adds through his films being identified by SAFTA, Newcastle is being showcased to a larger audience. “Newcastle is really growing.”

Last year, Thulani brought Darlington Michaels to Newcastle. Michaels is best known for his role as Georgie ‘Papa G’ Zamdela in Isidingo.

Be sure to stay tuned to Langelihle Films Productions. Who knows, you might catch yourself on screen.
