Traffic officers put a halt to reckless driving
The Easter weekend began tragically, with a serious collision on the Madadeni Road on Thursday, March 29.
A staggering 17 people were injured, and one person died. However, to safeguard motorists, a road block was held at the Allen Street and N11 intersection on Thursday afternoon from 2pm, outside Hilldrop.
Traffic Officers from Newcastle Municipality’s Community Safety Department, in conjunction with Newcastle SAPS, pulled motorists over for inspection.

“We checked driver’s licences, car licences and tested motorists alcohol levels,” explained Councillor Sombu Buthelezi from Newcastle Municipality. She explains the purpose of the road block was to ensure the roads remained safe over the long weekend.

With traffic and police officers maintaining constant vigilance over the next Easter period, motorists are encouraged to follow the traffic laws. “We want to ensure everyone has a good, safe Easter,” Buthelezi emphasised.

Further road blocks will be conducted, and motorists are urged to cooperate with law enforcement. Be safe and responsible on the roads.
