While the Regional Championships were cancelled, there is a racing event within the next few days.

Newcastle Raceway Club is more than a sports organisation for speed freaks.

Over the past 22 years, the Newcastle Raceway Club has become an integral part of Newcastle’s community.

Chairperson, Boet Buys, has been with the sports club from the very beginning. “I actually helped build the Oval Track and develop it,” he says. Through the years, the club has grown tremendously, taking part in several charitable drives and racing tournaments.

One major tournament held at the Oval Track is the Regional Championships. “It takes place every three years in Newcastle.”

The Regional Championships were meant to take place on Saturday, August 18, but due to poor weather conditions, the event had to be called off. However, avid racing enthusiasts still made their way to the track.

Hendrik van der Merwe tests the track on Saturday, but weather conditions put a damper on the event.

“We have also held the South African Championships once, and we are aiming to hold it in Newcastle next year again,” says Boet.

While racing tournaments such as the Regional and South African Championships draw in tourists and promotes local talent on the track, this is but one benefit of the Oval Track.

Racers meet at Newcastle Raceway Club on a monthly basis, with spectators cheering on their favourite drivers.

“The main focus is to entertain people in a safe way. Giving the community the opportunity to enjoy good clean, fun for the entire family,” says Boet.
