Winter has settled firmly across South Africa, bringing a noticeable drop in temperatures and sending many residents back to their jackets, jerseys and extra blankets.

With the weekend now approaching, and with many people looking forward to a slightly slower start without the usual rush into the morning chill, attention turns to what Newcastle, Ladysmith and Vryheid can expect from the weather over the coming days.

This comes as the South African Weather Service continues to warn of a cold front moving across several provinces, with some communities already feeling its effects.

Within this broader outlook, AccuWeather’s latest forecast points to a run of settled conditions for Newcastle, Ladysmith, and Vryheid, with intervals of sunshine expected over the next three days and daytime temperatures remaining mild.

The sharper edge, however, will be felt after sunset. Nighttime temperatures are set to fall steeply, with several areas brushing freezing or slipping below it.

With this in mind, AccuWeather’s weekend forecast points to the following conditions across Newcastle, Ladysmith and Vryheid:

Friday, 5 June 2026

In Newcastle, mild daytime conditions are expected, with temperatures reaching 18°C. However, conditions will turn much colder after sunset, with the temperature dropping to 0°C overnight.

In Ladysmith, intervals of sunshine are expected through the day, with temperatures climbing to 17°C. By nightfall, the temperature is forecast to drop to 1°C.

In Vryheid, fair conditions are expected during the day, with temperatures reaching 17°C. After sunset, temperatures are also forecast to fall to 1°C.

Sunday, 7 June 2026

In Newcastle, mild conditions are expected to continue, with daytime temperatures reaching 18°C. After dark, temperatures are forecast to fall to 2°C.

In Ladysmith, a relatively mild day is expected, with temperatures reaching 18°C. Evening conditions will become cooler, with the temperature dropping to 1°C.

In Vryheid, fair conditions are expected, with temperatures reaching 18°C during the day. After sunset, temperatures are forecast to drop to 2°C.

Overall, the pattern remains clear: mild days will give way to cold and, in some areas, very cold nights across Newcastle, Ladysmith and Vryheid.

While daytime conditions are unlikely to cause much disruption, the real bite will come after sunset and during the early morning hours, when temperatures fall sharply.

Residents are therefore encouraged to dress warmly, take practical precautions against the cold, and ensure adequate warmth at home during the colder nights.

Commuters, shift workers and those travelling after dark should also remain mindful of the sharper overnight drop, particularly in areas where temperatures are expected to reach freezing or below.

As always, weather conditions can change without warning, and the public is encouraged to stay updated through reliable weather services and trusted media outlets.
