A doctor attached to Madadeni Provincial Hospital has appeared in court after being charged with four counts of sexual assault, following allegations involving female patients treated at the provincial healthcare facility.
Dr Syham Prabhakaran Nair appeared before the Madadeni Magistrate Court on Thursday, 30 April 2026, following his arrest on Tuesday, 28 April 2026.

The matter has since drawn public concern, given the nature of the allegations and the setting in which they are alleged to have taken place.
As previously reported by Newcastillian News, the arrest followed information brought to law enforcement that the doctor had allegedly sexually assaulted patients while working at the hospital. KZN SAPS spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that four patients had come forward, while a whistleblower initially alerted SAPS, setting the investigation in motion.

During the court proceedings, prosecutor Advocate Thulisile Shabalala confirmed that Dr Nair faces four counts of sexual assault.
The State requested a postponement to allow outstanding bail investigations to be finalised.
The request was granted, with the matter postponed to Friday, 8 May 2026, when Dr Nair is expected to return to the Madadeni Magistrate Court.
Outside court, one of the complainants spoke about her alleged experience. According to her account, she had initially sought medical treatment for a lower back problem. She alleged that during the consultation, the doctor instructed her to kneel and touch her toes, before allegedly rubbing his groin area against her and touching her breasts.
She further alleged that he later instructed her to lie down, where the inappropriate physical contact continued.
The complainant said the alleged incident had left her fearful of seeking medical treatment.
Her account has not yet been tested in court.
Nevertheless, the case now moves into the bail phase, with the State expected to place further information before the court once investigations linked to bail have been completed.
While the allegations remain before the courts, the matter has already raised broader questions around patient safety, trust in public healthcare environments, and the importance of whistleblowers in bringing alleged misconduct to the attention of authorities.
As always, Newcastillian News will continue to follow the matter as it proceeds through the legal process.
