Motorists travelling on the R103 towards Colenso, just outside Ladysmith, are being urged to proceed with caution as urgent road repairs are set to get underway on this important route in KwaZulu-Natal.
The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) has confirmed that emergency concrete repairs will begin on Tuesday, 14 April 2026, on the section heading towards Colenso, between chainage (CH) 260 and CH 2848.

The work is expected to affect both lanes and may result in delays for motorists moving through the Ladysmith area.
According to SANRAL, the repairs will involve the removal of damaged concrete and the reconstruction of the affected portions of roadway. Although temporary closures will be required during the course of the project, one side of the road at the Engen intersection in Ladysmith will remain open to accommodate traffic.
The agency has also indicated that thickened edge repairs will be undertaken at the same intersection.
Residents and motorists are further advised that the left-hand side of Buckingham Street will also be impacted as the repair work progresses.
At this stage, SANRAL has not announced a completion date for the project, meaning road users may need to prepare for ongoing disruption over the coming weeks. Drivers making use of the route between Ladysmith, Colenso and Bergville are encouraged to allow additional travel time, remain patient, and stay alert for changes in traffic flow.
While the repairs are likely to cause temporary inconvenience, the work forms part of SANRAL’s continued efforts to strengthen road infrastructure and improve safety along a route that serves as a key connection for the region.
For now, motorists are being encouraged to remain cautious and to keep an eye on official updates as the project moves ahead.
