The South African Police Service has launched a murder investigation after a man’s body was discovered on 27 November 2025 beside the Surrey Umzinyathi River in Osizweni, Newcastle, with his penis and testicles severed.

According to confirmed information from Newcastle SAPS spokesperson Lizzy Arumugam, the 31-year-old man’s body was found by local residents shortly after 14:00 on the day of the incident.

Upon arriving at the scene, reports confirmed — as later verified by Arumugam — that the victim’s genitalia had been deliberately amputated, injuries indicating he endured severe suffering before he died.

After intensive investigative efforts, detectives from Osizweni SAPS traced and arrested three male suspects believed to be responsible for the killing.

While the exact motive remains under active investigation, Arumugam confirmed that anger appeared to have been a central factor in the attack. However, with the inquiry still ongoing, she declined to provide further details, stating: “Currently, police investigations into the matter are still ongoing, as to establish exactly what happened.”

This killing took place against the backdrop of KwaZulu-Natal’s persistent violent-crime challenge.

The latest South African Police Service (SAPS) crime statistics for the second quarter of the 2025/2026 financial year (July–September 2025), released on 28 November 2025, recorded 1,189 murders in the province – a slight 0.8 % decrease from the previous quarter, yet still equivalent to roughly one-fifth of the national total.

Sexual offences rose during the same period, increasing 5.6 % to 2,433 reported cases, while rapes climbed 6.7 % to 1,969. SAPS data attributes most murders and sexual offences to interpersonal disputes, frequently linked to alcohol or drug use, and occurring in townships, residential areas and unlicensed liquor outlets – settings that characterise Osizweni and the greater Newcastle area. Stations such as Inanda, Plessislaer and Umlazi continue to rank among the highest in the country for reported rapes.

The deliberate mutilation and killing of a 31-year-old man in Osizweni is entirely consistent with the province’s dominant pattern of extreme, anger-fuelled violence, much of it rooted in alcohol abuse and unresolved personal conflict.

The arrest of three suspects, while a necessary step, changes nothing about the broader reality that thousands of comparable cases continue to occur across KwaZulu-Natal every year.

Until the systemic factors driving this level of brutality are confronted head-on, incidents of this nature will remain an entrenched feature of life in the province.
