Elon Musk has reignited cultural debate by calling on parents to cancel their Netflix subscriptions, arguing that the streaming giant is pushing inappropriate gender identity messaging in shows aimed at children.

The controversy centres on Netflix’s animated series Dead End: Paranormal Park, which features a transgender teenage protagonist.

Conservative groups, including Libs of TikTok, highlighted past online comments by the show’s creator, Hamish Steele, leading to calls for boycotts.

Musk reshared one of these posts from user Matt Van Swol, who wrote:

Musk’s remarks triggered a wave of online cancellations, with thousands of users posting screenshots showing they had terminated their accounts.

Musk responded simply: “Same“, further confirming he had cancelled his subscription.

He also shared the following on X:

Public Backlash and Market Impact

Furthermore, search data revealed a sharp spike in queries for “cancel Netflix” immediately following Musk’s posts, and the company’s stock dipped 2–3% in the days after (at the time of publication). Analysts, however, caution that the decline may reflect broader market pressures alongside the backlash.

Netflix Under Fire

Critics argue that Netflix is deliberately advancing a political agenda by including transgender identity in children’s programming. They claim this content is inappropriate for young audiences and part of a wider push to politicise childhood entertainment.

Netflix has not issued a direct response to Musk’s comments. Steele, the show’s creator, has denied allegations that he celebrated the death of Charlie Kirk, and has condemned harassment he received online in the aftermath.

Broader Significance

Musk’s call to boycott Netflix follows previous clashes with companies he views as politically motivated. With over 190 million followers on X, his influence has once again translated into real-world impact, drawing renewed attention to what children are exposed to on global streaming platforms.

This underscores the growing tension between entertainment companies’ creative direction and parental concerns over what constitutes suitable programming for children.
