The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has officially opened the 2025 tax filing season, running from 21 July to 20 October 2025. With a sharp focus on digital efficiency and simplified compliance, SARS has introduced a range of enhancements, including expanded auto-assessments, upgraded online tools, and updated legislation—designed to make the filing process more seamless for individual taxpayers and trusts.

Over 5.8 million auto-assessments have already been issued this season, a 16% increase from 2024, as SARS continues to modernise its systems using real-time data from employers, banks, medical schemes, and insurers.

Here’s what South Africans need to know to stay compliant, claim refunds faster, and avoid unnecessary penalties.

SARS has widened its auto-assessment initiative to include over 4.8 million taxpayers, even extending to some provisional taxpayers with simple tax profiles. Between 7 and 20 July 2025, eligible individuals received SMS or email notifications prompting them to review pre-populated assessments.

If all information is correct, no action is needed—SARS will process refunds within 72 hours. In 2024, R10.6 billion in refunds was paid out under this programme.

However, if any income or deductions are missing—such as freelance income, investment returns, or rental earnings—taxpayers must amend their returns using eFiling or the SARS MobiApp by 20 October 2025. Ignoring this could result in penalties ranging from R250 to R16,000 per month for non-compliance.

Key Filing Deadlines

Understanding SARS’s revised timelines is essential to avoiding costly mistakes:

  • 21 July – 20 October 2025: Standard filing period for non-provisional taxpayers, including those making changes to auto-assessments.
  • By 19 January 2026: Extended deadline for provisional taxpayers and trusts.

SARS recommends preparing early and gathering essential documents such as:

  • IRP5/IT3(a) certificates
  • Medical aid tax certificates
  • Proof of deductions (e.g., travel logs or home office expenses)

Early filing helps prevent delays, especially as digital traffic intensifies closer to the deadline. In 2024, over 10.2 million users accessed SARS’s digital platforms in a single month.

New Digital Tools and Security Measures

To enhance user experience and security, SARS has made key improvements:

  • A new ‘Express’ tab on eFiling allows fast access to assessments, submissions, and banking updates.
  • Two-factor authentication is now required for all digital logins.
  • Refunds will only be made to pre-verified bank accounts chosen from a drop-down list during banking detail updates.
  • SARS communications are now fully digital. Printed letters have been phased out for efficiency and sustainability.

To confirm whether a message is legitimate, taxpayers are encouraged to verify it via eFiling or the SARS Contact Centre (0800 00 7277). Suspicious emails or SMSs should be reported to: [email protected].

Legislative and Form Changes

A number of technical updates have been implemented this season:

  • Foreign Tax Credits: Amendments to section 6quat now allow full use of foreign capital gains tax credits, with unused credits carried forward for six years.
  • Married Taxpayers: For those married in community of property, SARS will apply a 50% split for income earned from trusts.
  • New Source Codes: Local (4306) and foreign dividends (4307) are now reflected under the non-taxable section, and backdated earnings are captured under code 3623.
  • Expats and Residency Changes: Those who’ve ceased South African tax residency must complete dedicated sections in their ITR12 or IRP6 returns. The RAV01 form will now auto-fill cessation and reinstatement dates for accuracy.

Furthermore, SARS will add a printed note on the ITA34 when carryover amounts are not applied, particularly during verification reviews.

How to Navigate the Filing Process

Step 1: Check Your Auto-Assessment

  • Between 7 and 20 July, SARS sent notifications. Use the SARS Online Query System or eFiling to confirm your status.
  • If all information is correct, no action is required.
  • If anything is incorrect or missing, file corrections by 20 October 2025.

Step 2: Prepare Your Documents

  • Compile all income and deduction records early.
  • Provisional taxpayers or those with complex incomes (such as freelance work, property, or overseas earnings) should keep thorough documentation.

Step 3: Use SARS Digital Tools

  • Register for eFiling or the MobiApp.
  • Ensure two-factor authentication is enabled.
  • Use the Express tab for quick navigation.
  • For help, SARS’s YouTube channel and knowledge base offer step-by-step tutorials.

Step 4: Book an Appointment if Necessary

  • Visit the eBooking platform or SMS 47277 with “Booking [ID/Passport Number]”.
  • Virtual appointments are also available.
  • Upload documents at least 24 hours in advance and bring your confirmation number to avoid cancellation.

Avoiding Scams and Penalties

  • Never share banking details via SMS or email.
  • Verify SARS messages through official platforms.
  • File before the deadlines to avoid late submission penalties.
  • If you owe taxes, use your tax reference number followed by “T00000000” as your payment reference when paying via EFT or SARS MobiApp.

The 2025 tax season brings real changes to how SARS operates, more digital, more automated, and more efficient. Whether you’re accepting an auto-assessment or handling a complex return, being prepared is the best way to avoid mistakes, delays, and unnecessary penalties.
