A 70-year-old man was fatally shot in an attack at his Dannhauser residence, leaving his grandson injured and his loved ones in profound shock. The incident has prompted an intensive police investigation to uncover the motive and apprehend those responsible.

According to police Spokesperson Lizzy Arumugam, the tragedy occurred shortly before 19:00 on Thursday, 3 July 2025.
The elderly man was in his bedroom when his wife heard the sound of shattering glass, followed by a rapid succession of gunshots fired into the room.
Fearing for her life, Arumugam confirmed the elderly woman sought safety in another bedroom until the gunfire subsided. Arumugam confirmed that the man’s wife then returned to his bedroom, where she found him with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the prompt arrival of paramedics, the elderly man was pronounced dead at the scene.
While the grandson’s exact location within the house during the attack remains undisclosed, Arumugam noted that he sustained injuries and received treatment from paramedics on site.
As of 10 July 2025, police investigations continue, with no suspects identified and no motive for the shooting yet established.
As further police investigations into the murder continue, as reported by Newcastillian News, a separate but equally harrowing home invasion unfolded in Aviary Hill, Newcastle. On Saturday afternoon, 5 July 2025, a homeowner was forced to defend himself and his nephew when a group of armed men stormed his residence on Tarentaal Street.
According to Amajuba District SAPS Spokesperson, Constable Nonjabulo Langa, the suspects opened fire after gaining entry, prompting the homeowner to return fire in an effort to protect his family. The intruders fled the scene shortly thereafter, and no serious injuries were reported.

The violent attacks described above underscore a persistent vulnerability to home invasions and murders within residential premises in KwaZulu-Natal.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS) crime statistics for the fourth quarter of the 2024/2025 financial year (January to March 2025), whilst national murder figures decreased by 12.4%, KwaZulu-Natal, alongside Gauteng, Eastern Cape, and Western Cape, consistently represents a disproportionate share of the nation’s severe crime incidents, as stated by Minister Senzo Mchunu.
The alarming persistence of violent crime in KwaZulu-Natal necessitates immediate and robust action to dismantle criminal networks and curb the proliferation of illegal firearms. Initiatives such as the KZN Council Against Crime and Community Policing Forums must be prioritised to enhance community trust and strengthen local security measures.

The devastating human toll of these incidents demands unwavering commitment to accountability and effective policing.
