Newcastle Municipality’s Acting Municipal Manager, Dr Dumisani Thabethe, survived a shooting incident on the evening of Wednesday, 18 June 2025.

According to a statement released by the Newcastle Municipality’s Communications Unit, preliminary reports suggest that Dr Thabethe was targeted by gunfire while driving home.
He survived the incident, and the matter is with the police.
“The matter is currently under investigation by the South African Police Service (SAPS). At this stage, the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, and no information is available regarding the motive or persons responsible. As such, the Municipality will not be making any further comments or speculations while the investigation is ongoing,” stated the Communications Unit.
In response to the incident, the Newcastle Municipality has affirmed its commitment to supporting Dr Thabethe’s family and colleagues during this challenging time. “We also wish to assure the public that we are reviewing all relevant safety protocols in light of this incident. We call upon members of the public and the media to allow space for the investigation to unfold and to respect the privacy of Dr Thabethe and his family,” said the Communications Unit.
The Municipality further underscored its dedication to collaborating fully with law enforcement authorities and confirmed that any verified updates will be shared through its official channels.
