Trump Targets SA over “Massive Human Rights Violations”

Key points in this article:

·         Trump’s Dramatic Funding Cut: In a bold move, Trump declared an immediate cessation of all U.S. financial support to South Africa, spotlighting what he describes as rampant land grabs and the harsh treatment of specific communities.

  1. A Stand Against Alleged Injustices: Trump didn’t mince words, accusing South Africa of human rights violations on a massive scale, promising not just to cut funds but to delve deep with an investigation into the heart of these allegations, creating suspense over what might be uncovered.
  2. South Africa’s Counter-Narrative: Facing Trump’s accusations, the South African government refutes any notion of land confiscation, portraying their Expropriation Act as a beacon of equality and justice, a sentiment not shared by many. They extended an olive branch for discussion, hinting at a complex diplomatic dance ahead with the U.S. while clarifying that American aid is a minor part of their financial landscape.
  3. Civil Society’s Dire Warning: AfriForum steps into the fray, cautioning that Trump’s punitive measures could unfairly burden ordinary South Africans already grappling with economic woes. The entity pushes for legal reforms and suggests that if punishment is due, it should laser-focus on those in power, not the people, setting the stage for a contentious internal debate on policy and international relations.
Donald Trump has announced he will sever all funding to South Africa while launching an investigation into the government’s land expropriation policies and its treatment of certain demographic groups.

On Sunday, 2 February 2025, Trump posted on the social media platform Truth Social, stating, “South Africa is confiscating land, and treating certain classes of people VERY BADLY. It is a bad situation that the Radical Left Media doesn’t want to so much as mention. A massive Human Rights VIOLATION, at a minimum, is happening for all to see.”

He underscored his stance by asserting, “The United States won’t stand for it, we will act,” and affirmed that he would halt all future funding to South Africa until a comprehensive investigation into these matters is concluded.

In subsequent remarks to journalists, Trump described the actions of South Africa’s leadership as “some terrible things, horrible things.” He elaborated that his administration was scrutinising these issues to ascertain the full extent of what South Africa was doing to its citizens, hinting at possibly graver scenarios than currently acknowledged.

This statement follows the signing of the Expropriation Bill into law by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa in January 2025.

In response, the South African Presidency conveyed its readiness to engage with President Trump on issues of mutual interest and concern. On Monday, 3 February 2025, they issued an official statement emphasising South Africa’s commitment to constitutional democracy, the rule of law, justice, and equality, and refuted allegations of land seizure.

“The recently adopted Expropriation Act is not a confiscation instrument, but a constitutionally mandated legal process that ensures public access to land in an equitable and just manner as guided by the Constitution. South Africa, like the United States of America and other countries, has always had expropriation laws that balance the need for public usage of land with the protection of property owners’ rights,” the statement clarified.

Furthermore, the Presidency also expressed optimism about forthcoming dialogues with the Trump administration regarding South Africa’s land reform policy.

“We are certain that out of those engagements, we will share a better and common understanding over these matters. The US remains a key strategic political and trade partner for South Africa. With the exception of PEPFAR Aid, which constitutes 17% of South Africa’s HIV/AIDS program, there is no other funding that South Africa receives from the United States.”

Furthermore, the civil rights organisation, AfriForum, said it would also make an urgent request to the South African government to table an amendment to the Expropriation Act, in an attempt to avert this crisis, that will ensure the protection of property rights in South Africa.

According to Kallie Kriel, CEO of AfriForum, his organisation has already warned President Cyril Ramaphosa and the ANC that the signing of the Expropriation Act as well as the application of the country’s existing race laws have serious negative implications for investor confidence in South Africa.

Kriel further emphasised that there are serious concerns about the impact that Trump’s punitive measures will have on ordinary citizens who are already suffering from economic pressure.

“AfriForum’s position is and has always been that the foolish government and president should be punished for their destructive policies rather than the country’s citizens,” Kriel added.

A reader, who wished to remain anonymous out of fear stated, “Most South Africans have been praying for someone to save us from our renowned corrupt and biased government for years. Every person in this country, except for the connected, is living hard and under terrible conditions. When President Trump was elected, I think second to Americans, South Africans cheered the loudest as he is the only person who can save us from the insanity we are all living in.”
