The close-knit community of Uitkomst Colliery has been shaken to its core following a devastating accident that claimed the life of one of its own. In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Mthobisi Msibi, a dedicated staff member, tragically lost his life in an underground incident on the evening of Wednesday, 31 July 2024.
Uitkomst Colliery has shared that Msibi, a Linesman employed at the company since 2021, was working diligently underground to secure rock in the mining face—a crucial task aimed at ensuring safety in the hazardous environment.
Despite his efforts, a sudden fall of ground occurred, leading to a catastrophic outcome.
“The Uitkomst emergency procedure was immediately followed with the help of management and rescue teams,” said a representative from the colliery. Tragically, despite the swift and valiant efforts to save Msibi, he could not be rescued.
His untimely death has cast a pall over the colliery, with senior management, staff, and other stakeholders coming together to pay their respects at his funeral on Tuesday, 6 August 2024.
Located about 20 kilometres from Utrecht and 23 kilometres from Newcastle, Uitkomst Colliery is known for its high-grade metallurgical and thermal coal production.
This deeply tragic incident has prompted an urgent and thorough investigation into the fall of ground and the circumstances surrounding Msibi’s death. In response to the event, the colliery’s management, in collaboration with stakeholder unions, is implementing extensive measures to enhance strata control and prevent future incidents.
“We are also committed to complying with any recommendations or instructions that the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) may impose once the investigation into the incident has been completed,” assured Uitkomst Colliery.
As the investigation unfolds, the mining company told Newcastillian News that it remains resolute in its commitment to safety. “This accident has shocked the entire Uitkomst workforce and community. We have an excellent safety record. Uitkomst remains dedicated to all employees’ health and safety, and we believe that zero harm can be achieved,” they emphasised.
In the wake of this traumatic event, Newcastillian News extends its deepest condolences to Mthobisi Msibi’s family and friends. Our thoughts are with them during this profoundly difficult time.
