On Wednesday, 31 July 2024, the Amajuba District Municipality, in collaboration with the KZN Department of Health, the KZN Department of Social Development, and the KZN Department of Sports, Arts and Culture, hosted the selection trials for the upcoming provincial sporting event that promises to be memorable.

Thami Sibiya of the KZN Department of Sports, Arts and Culture explained that the event held on Wednesday was to select individuals who will represent the Amajuba District at the Provincial Golden Games, scheduled for September 2024 in the King Cetshwayo Municipality.

Furthermore, the Golden Games is a national event where individuals over 65 years of age compete in various sports at a provincial level.

With this in mind, Sibiya noted, “The event is for selecting the Amajuba District team, with participants hailing from Newcastle, Madadeni, Osizweni, Dannhauser, and Utrecht. The participants had to compete in several sporting codes, including soccer, jukskei, duck walk, athletics, ball passing, ball relay, and more.”

While the names of the selected individuals are still to be announced, Sibiya explained that once the team is chosen, they will begin preparations for the Provincial Games, where the local elderly community will strive to bring pride to their district.

As the judges from the respective departments watched intently to determine who would advance to the next level, the elderly residents demonstrated unrivalled determination, excelling in various sporting codes and proving that age is just merely a number.

“I have been involved in the Golden Games for about 10 years now, and it is a great initiative to keep us on the go and active,” stated one of the day’s enthusiastic participants.

With Newcastle’s Arbor Park Sports Grounds buzzing with hundreds of athletic elderly sports enthusiasts, what are your thoughts on this inspiring event?
