Search for missing Ladysmith teen: Community urged to help

A Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal mother’s life has been thrown into turmoil following her 14-year-old daughter vanishing without a trace, leaving her in a state of constant dread and uncertainty about her child’s safety.

Discussing the distressing situation, Ladysmith SAPS spokesperson, Warrant Officer Basheer Khan, explained that 14-year-old Owami Akhona Mthethwa went missing on Monday, 22 July 2024, after she left her Ladysmith home at 7 am.

When she failed to return home later that day, Warrant Officer Khan stated that young Owami’s mother reported her missing at the Ladysmith SAPS. Now, with Owami officially missing for three days, the Ladysmith SAPS is urgently calling on community members to assist in locating the missing teen and reuniting her with her anguished mother.

Offering a description of Owami Akhona Mthethwa, Warrant Officer Khan highlighted, “She was wearing green trousers and a grey jersey at the time of her disappearance. She is 1.4m in height and of average build, with short hair and no distinguishing marks.”

He further emphasised that the police are appealing to the community to come forward with any information on Owami’s whereabouts.

If anyone can provide information on the missing girl, they are urged to contact the investigating officer, Sergeant P. Khanyile, on 036 638 3325 or 082 411 7070. Alternatively, community members can also contact the SAPS on 10111 or call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
