On Monday, 17 June 2024, Ladysmith residents were horrified to see blood flowing from blocked sewage pipes down Golf Road and into stormwater drains. This gruesome sight had numerous residents concerned, prompting action from the uThukela District Municipality.
According to the municipality’s communications unit, The uThukela Municipal Health Services immediately launched an investigation to determine the cause of this alarming scene.
Following investigations, it was discovered that the blood originated from illegal slaughter activities carried out by a resident in celebration of a religious event. “The individual in question had failed to apply for permission to slaughter in a residential area, and had slaughtered a total of 70 sheep,” explained the uThukela District Municipality’s Communications Unit.
In response to the violation, the municipality stated that it acted decisively to halt the unauthorised activities. “We have issued three fines in accordance with the Water Services bylaws for discharging waste or foreign matter into the municipal sewer line. Additionally, the Certificate of Acceptability (COA) issued for processing biltong at the premises has been revoked,” the Communications Unit stated.
As the uThukela District Municipality enforced its bylaws, the government entity expressed gratitude to the community for their vigilance and assured residents of their commitment to maintaining public health and safety.
