In the early hours of Wednesday morning, 8 May 2024, a Newcastle businessman was thrust into a harrowing encounter with two armed assailants.

Details emerged from Imran Ghafoor of the Newcastle Crime Fighter Task Team, revealing how the victim, on the verge of departing his business premises at approximately 2:30 am, was ambushed by the menacing duo.
With brazen audacity, they stripped him of his cellphone and other possessions, amounting to an estimated worth of R14,000, before fleeing the scene.
Subsequently, the Newcastle SAPS launched an intensive investigation into the incident, determined to bring the culprits to justice. Remarkably, within hours, law enforcement achieved a breakthrough. Ghafoor disclosed that on Thursday afternoon, 9 May 2024, crucial intel led them to believe that the perpetrators were in Amiel Park, Newcastle.
With precision and determination, a combined task force comprising the Visible Policing Unit (VISPOL) and the Newcastle Crime Fighter Task Team swooped in.
At the identified location within the neighbourhood, Ghafoor recounted, “One suspect was arrested and the approximately R14 000 goods were recovered. The weapon used in the robbery was also recovered,” said Ghafoor, who noted that the second suspect was still at large.
