Determined to remedy a long standing problem, an Arbor Park resident has grabbed the proverbial “bull by the horns” and has implemented a solution to address various potholes on her street.
Undeterred by the heat on Wednesday, 20 March 2024, Maureen Thwala has taken it upon herself to fill the large potholes that have plagued Elm Street for quite some time.
With the helping hand of Dumisani Ndlela, Maureen embarked on a mission to enhance safety for motorists in the area.
“The potholes have become worse over the past three months, and every time I drive here, I can feel it in my heart that something needs to be done. Cars struggle with these potholes, and they can be damaged,” Maureen explained earnestly.
Recognising the pressing need for action, particularly in Arbor Park where road conditions are notably dire, Maureen wasted no time in rolling up her sleeves. Armed with just basic tools—a spade, wheelbarrow, and broom—she and Dumisani set to work, filling the potholes near Arbor Park Primary School.
Despite the absence of tar mix, Maureen and Dumisani showed remarkable resourcefulness, using gravel and sand to patch up the road surface. Their makeshift solution ensured a temporary fix that would withstand rainfall and prevent further damage. “We are using the materials from my yard and pavement. I think we should look at trying to involve others, but we will be doing a small section first,” stated Maureen.
Furthermore, Maureen Thwala’s proactive stance in improving her community exemplified the power of individual action. Her unwavering commitment to making a positive difference, even in challenging conditions, served as a beacon of inspiration to us all.
As we celebrate Maureen’s initiative, let’s remember that positive change often begins with one person’s determination to make a difference.
