Zuma expected to rally support for new political party in Newcastle

Former South African President, Jacob Zuma is slated to make a public appearance in Newcastle on Sunday, 7 January 2024. The timing of his visit aligns with the preparations from political parties gearing up for the upcoming National and Provincial Elections.

However, it should be noted that Zuma, once the president of the African National Congress (ANC), will not be rallying for the ANC.

In a twist announced in early December 2023, Zuma withdrew his support from the long-standing political powerhouse.

Instead, the former ANC president stated he would be throwing his weight behind the Umkhonto WeSizwe Party (MK Party). To kickstart this endeavour, Zuma will be hosting a meet and greet session at Madadeni College, a strategic move as the MK Party aims to gain traction in the approaching elections.

Moreover, Zuma’s endorsement is perceived as a pivotal boost for the party’s campaign, adding momentum to their electoral aspirations.

During the upcoming event, Zuma is expected to address the gathering and elucidate the party’s vision for the future. With his extensive political experience and influence, there is hope from the party that Zuma’s support could sway undecided voters and fortify the MK Party’s standing in the region.

However, Zuma’s departure from the ANC, a party he served for 64 years, shocked many. Contrary to his earlier commitment to remain an ANC member until his last days, the former president has thrown his support behind the relatively smaller Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party. The party, registered this year, takes its name from the erstwhile armed wing of the ANC.

Apparently, Zuma’s decision is rooted in his belief that the ANC no longer aligns with the values he once staunchly supported.
