In the face of scorching temperatures on Friday morning, 6 October 2023, a resolute group of Memel farmers demonstrated their commitment by persisting with repair efforts on the R34, commonly known as the Memel Road.

The initiative to repair the notorious potholes on Memel Road initially commenced in October 2021, with Memel farmers uniting to address the hazardous conditions jeopardising motorist safety.

Although progress on the project waned towards the close of 2022, recent weeks have seen a remarkable resurgence in momentum. This upturn followed a generous donation by ArcelorMittal South Africa’s (AMSA) Newcastle Works in September 2023, contributing an impressive 60 tonnes of cold mix tar to the cause.

Confirming the second tranche of cold mix tar from the steel giant, Memel farmer Werner de Jager attested that the delivery was received during the week. This prompt delivery spurred the farmers to gather on Friday morning and commence the task of filling the potholes along Botha’s Pass, working towards Memel.
In the midst of enduring the blistering heat, one farmer voiced their resolve, stating, “Someone has to do something, and we are willing to put in the effort to ensure the safety of everyone on the roads.”
In discussions about the benevolent donation, Joe Nowbath from AMSA Newcastle Works affirmed that the steel giant had contributed over 1000 bags of tar mix to bolster the farmers’ project. ” The condition of the Memel Road is terrible. To ensure the safety of motorists and the community who travel on the road, we wanted to support the farmers in the drive,” stated Nowbath.
As the farmers continue their diligent efforts on the road, motorists are urged to exercise caution while navigating through the ongoing roadworks.
