In light thereof, a disturbing incident occurred on Sunday, 9 July 2023, when a Newcastle woman fell victim to robbery after she stopped to offer food to a homeless person.

The incident took place in Lantana Street, Lennoxton, shortly after 6 pm, as confirmed by an official police source.

“The woman explained that she was driving when she stopped to give a homeless person food. While she was talking to him, another person forcefully grabbed her necklace,” the police source revealed.

Startled by the sudden assault, the woman demanded that the perpetrator release his grip, stating that she would comply with his demands. Subsequently, she handed over her jewellery to the assailant and swiftly fled the scene, seeking safety.

Although it remains uncertain whether the homeless person and the robber were connected, the police source emphasised further investigations are underway.

This robbery has prompted the Newcastle police to intensify their efforts in probing the incident. However, it is not the first time that homeless individuals have been associated with criminal activities in the city.

In May 2023, Newcastillian News reported on the growing presence of beggars and homeless people in Newcastle. During that period, Imran Ghafoor from the Newcastle Crime Fighter Task Team highlighted how the large number of beggars across Newcastle, targeted law abiding citizens.
