As loadshedding continues to plague South Africans on a daily basis, residents in Newcastle have turned to solar power as an alternative. However, this seemingly eco-friendly solution has inadvertently given rise to a new criminal trend, with thieves now setting their sights on homes equipped with solar panels and lights.

Newcastle Crime Fighter Task Team member Imran Ghafoor shed light on the escalating number of thefts involving solar panels and solar lights in the area.
According to Ghafoor, this crime has become alarmingly common in Newcastle, occurring almost daily and affecting various neighbourhoods, particularly Lennoxton.
“The criminals responsible tend to strike between 4 am and 6 am,” said Ghafoor, highlighting that perpetrators are taking advantage of the time when residents are in a deep sleep.
Moreover, Ghafoor highlighted a recent success in combating this emerging trend when Optimus Protection Services apprehended a suspect on Monday morning, 26 June 2023, on Nerine Street in Lennoxton.
The suspect was found in possession of stolen panels by Optimus Protection Services, and he was subsequently detained and the stolen goods recovered. Ghafoor emphasised that this incident underscores the pressing issue at hand.

“Because of loadshedding, there is a market for solar panels and lights, with residents turning to solar light up their homes during loadshedding,” said Ghafoor, who pointed out that the stolen items make their way back into the Newcastle community, but in an area where many Newcastillians are most likely not to check.
“The solar panels and lights are predominately found in Siyahlahla-la. Because of the high market for solar lighting, everyone is going for it now,” he explained.
To mitigate this concerning crime trend, Ghafoor suggested that residents take simple yet effective measures to make it more difficult for criminals to strike.
He emphasised the importance of placing solar panels and lights in elevated locations, where they are less visible to deter potential thieves.
“Residents must also join neighbourhood watches and report all suspicious behaviour to law enforcement,” Ghafoor urged.
As this emerging crime trend threatens the security of numerous Newcastillians, it is crucial for the community to remain vigilant and proactive.
