Protecting Yourself During a Nuclear Attack

The threat of a nuclear attack has been a reality since the dawn of the atomic age. While it is impossible to completely protect yourself against the effects of radioactive fallout, there are some steps you can take to reduce the risk of injury or even death.

The first step in protecting yourself from a nuclear attack is to stay informed.

Be sure to keep up with the latest news and developments regarding any nuclear threats in your area. Additionally, it is important to know what type of attack is most likely, as different types of nuclear attacks require different protective measures

With the increasing threat of nuclear warfare, it is important to know how to protect yourself in the event of such an attack. While the odds of a nuclear attack are slim, it is still important to be prepared, especially with the current war in Europe on the go.

Here are some tips on how to protect yourself in the event of a nuclear attack and which medications and goods you should have on hand.

1. You should find a saferoom or basement in your home, as this will provide the most protection from radiation.

2. Stock it with emergency supplies. These supplies should include water, non-perishable food, medical supplies, and a first aid kit. You should also have a battery-operated radio and radiation medication.

3. You should also seal all windows and doors to keep any radioactive fallout out of your shelter. If there is no underground shelter available, it’s best to go to the innermost room and seal it up.

4. The medication to keep in your saferoom should include:

  • Potassium iodide – This is a nonradioactive form of iodine.
  • Prussian blue – This class of dye binds to radioactive particles known as cesium and thallium.
  • And of course, Diethylenetriamine Pentetic acid  (DTPA). This substance binds to metals.

5. It is vital to remember that radiation battles to get through lead or a thick layer of concrete. Yet, can pass through numerous other materials, like wood with ease. Therefore, look at your saferoom and ensure it does not have windows or openings where gamma rays can pass through.

6. After a nuclear war, you can expect to be held up in your saferoom or bunker for at least 1-5 years, so be prepared and plan for the longest amount of time.
