Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

Earlier this afternoon, ArcelorMittal South Africa (AMSA) confirmed that a Newcastle Works employee was seriously injured on 4 January 2022. Due to the severity of the injury, the employee was hospitalised.

Tami Didiza, AMSA’s spokesperson, notes that the unfortunate incident occurred during the cleaning of the operational area. According to reports, his injuries included a fractured arm and jaw, and burn wounds to his face.

A qualified first aider treated the injured employee on-scene before being transported to a nearby hospital for specialised care and treatment.

The matter is now undergoing a thorough investigation to ascertain the root cause. One of the primary goals of the investigation, according to AMSA, is to ensure that similar incidents do not occur in the future.

Didiza adds that the company is providing the necessary assistance to the employee’s family. Additionally, the matter has been reported to the proper authorities.

Concluding, Kobus Verster, Chief Executive Officer of AMSA, says that any safety incident is entirely unacceptable to the business.

“We are continually reviewing, refocusing, and re-energising our efforts to eradicate accidents and fatalities across the business towards achieving our zero-harm goal.”
