Step by Step on how to get your digital vaccination certificate

Estimated reading time: 4 minutes

The South African COVID-19 Vaccine Certificate portal is virtually live. Some people have already obtained their certificates. However, it is not smooth sailing yet.

According to the National Department of Health’s website, the certificates are only applicable for fully vaccinated people.

Furthermore, the portal follows President Cyril Ramaphosa’s speech on 30 September 2021.

Addressing the nation, Ramaphosa explained that the Department of Health would be rolling out a vaccination certificate to provide secure and verifiable proof of vaccination.

The President elaborated on the use of the vaccine certificate by saying, “It can be used to facilitate travel, access to establishments and gatherings and other forms of activity that require proof of vaccination status.”

According to Ramaphosa, the government’s approach is informed by World Health Organization guidelines and aligns with international best practices.

“Streamlining and standardising proof of vaccination will also go a long way towards getting a number of international travel restrictions both from and into our country eased,” he declared.

1. How do you get your COVID-19 Vaccine Certificate?

The first step is to access the portal. To do this, click here.

Once the link is open, click on the highlighted words that state: Get my vaccine certificate

2. What information is then required?

Once you have clicked on the appropriate link, you will be asked to select the necessary identity type in your possession.

From there, you will be asked to fill in your contacts details, ID number and the Electronic Vaccination Data Systems (EVDS) code that you received. This is the code that you are sent via SMS after you have been fully vaccinated.

3. What happens after I fill in the information?

You will be asked to confirm your cellphone number, as recorded on EVDS. From there, you will be sent a one-time pin confirming the authenticity of the information you provided.

The pin must then be entered to access the final, digital Covid-19 vaccine certificate.

You will then receive your vaccine certificate with the necessary QR code that reflects your vaccination status.

According to the Department of Health, the QR code is not intended to be readable. Instead, it is meant to be used by entities requiring to verify the card’s validity, using a Vaccine Certificate System inbuilt QR scanner.

As people can now take the necessary steps to get their COVID-19 Vaccine Certificates, the Department of Health says it is currently at the testing phase of the system. This is to troubleshoot all possible glitches ahead of the official launch later this week.

Thus, the system is not yet officially functional in a live environment which will enable vaccinated individuals to access and download certificates.

The department’s Foster Mohale explains, “We had to build a lot of security into the system to protect individuals` personal data as much as possible.”

The development and release of fully-fledged COVID-19 vaccination certificates will be phased in overtime.

“Thus, we request members of the public to exercise patience while we implement the final refinement as we prepare to officially launch the first version of the COVID-19 vaccination digital certificate.”

However, he adds that the department is aware that a few lucky individuals managed to access the system and download their vaccination certificates.
