Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

On Tuesday, 24 August 2021, after receiving information, police stopped a truck transporting dagga from Pongola, KwaZulu-Natal, travelling towards Vryheid/Louwburg, seizing R3 million worth of the herbal plant.

Upon receiving the intel, Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala explains, “An operation was put in place to nail the suspects involved.”

This saw various units in the SAPS and other law enforcement agencies joining hands to participate in the operation. With plans set in motion, Captain Gwala says, “The truck was spotted along the R69 in the Louwsburg policing area, and it was stopped. Upon searching the truck, police found 33 bales of dry dagga which weighed 1567,5kg. The estimated street value of the recovered dagga is R3 million.”

Two suspects aged 43 and 46 were placed under arrest and are now expected to appear before the Louwsburg Magistrate’s Court.

While further investigations are underway, the SAPS highlights that dealing in cannabis remains a serious criminal offence in terms of the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act (No 140 of 199)2. Baring in mind, the SAPS is mandated to act against businesses that sell cannabis illegally and also against the customers who buy these products.

With home use not an issue in the country, the police state people need to familiarise themselves with the Cannabis for Private Purposes Bill to avoid participating in any illegal activities.

The aim of the Bill is not only to respect the right to privacy of an adult person to possess cannabis plant cultivation material; to cultivate a prescribed quantity of cannabis plants; to possess a prescribed quantity of cannabis; and to smoke and consume cannabis; but also to regulate the possession of cannabis plant cultivation material; the cultivation of cannabis plants; the possession of cannabis; and the smoking and consumption of cannabis by an adult person.

The Bill further focuses on the legal quantities for personal use by an adult person, cultivation offences, cannabis offences, as well as smoking and consumption offences.
