According to a National Department of Corrections statement, former President Jacob Zuma is set to walk out of prison for the day.

The Department claims, “In line with Section 44 (1)(a) of the Correctional Services Act, Former President Jacob Zuma has been granted compassionate leave in order to attend a family bereavement. Zuma will be attending his brother’s funeral at Nkandla. Michael Zuma died shortly after the former president started his 15-month prison sentence.”

In addition, the Department explains that a sentenced offender is granted permission to leave a correctional centre, remaining in custody, even while temporarily outside. “The permission granted for Mr Zuma is for 22 July 2021.” Noting, when outside a correctional facility, inmates need not wear offender uniforms.

As a short-term, low risk classified inmate, the Department of Correctional Services says that Zuma’s leave was processed and approved following the Correctional Services prescripts.
