As around 2000 people dig for 'Diamonds', thugs see opportunity

With the Ladysmith area doused in the limelight of late, following scores of people rushing to the Northern KwaZulu-Natal town of Hlathi outside the town, in search of diamonds, events appear to be unfolding.

In light of a recent report, it would appear that the lure of diamonds has attracted more than prospectors. Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele explains that while the Ekuvukeni Visible Policing members were monitoring the area of Hlathi, where a group of approximately 2000 people were digging the field looking for diamonds, they received information regarding a motor vehicle robbery.

The police officers proceeded to the Limehill turn-off, where the vehicle was last seen. Upon seeing the police, the villain attempted to make a u-turn.  “A chase ensued and the driver of the bakkie abandoned the vehicle, and tried to flee on foot, but he was caught and arrested,” said Colonel Mbele. Furthermore, police searched the vehicle, and a pistol with no serial number, one rifle and 16, R303 rounds of ammunition plus 47 rounds of shotgun ammunition were discovered. According to Colonel Mbele, out of the two suspects in the vehicle, only one was apprehended.

As the air thickens around the area due to illegal prospectors pilling into Hlathi, it would appear criminals are also now mining for opportunity themselves. What are your thoughts on the situation?
