Amajuba District Municipality hosted the Amajuba Sports, Arts and Culture Legendary Awards in partnership with the KZN Department of Arts and Culture, Department of Sports and Recreation and all three Local Municipalities within the District.
Taking place at Blackrock Casino on Friday evening, 28 May 2021, the awards ceremony saw guests celebrating local sports legends and their contributions to our community. The rationale behind the hosting of the awards was to acknowledge, recognise, honour and reward the meaningful and exceptional contribution made by various individuals/groups or teams in the development of sports, arts and culture within the District, culminating in provincial, national and international participation/recognition.
The focus of the awards was on achievements attained by individuals/groups/teams from the District, provincial, national, and internationally. Noting, Amajuba District has produced renowned sportsmen and women who have represented the country. Simultaneously the District has also delivered key figures in the field of arts and culture who competed at the highest level.
Addressing the award’s session, the Mayor of Amajuba District Municipality, Cllr Dr Musa Ngubane, thanked all the legends for their contribution to developing sport, arts and culture within the Amajuba District. He enthused, “The Amajuba District Municipality Sports, Arts and Culture Legendary Awards ceremony will become a traditional highlight within our District and the province at large. Making this ceremony more momentous is the need to pay homage to our sporting, arts and culture legends’ efforts to use sport as a tool for positive development and to heal a once divided society.”
Moreover, he elaborated that the awards aim to honour sports, culture, and arts people for their role in ensuring the growth, development, and transformation of sport, arts, and culture during difficult circumstances. “It also serves to acknowledge the contributions made by individuals such as activists, heroes and icons in shaping the future of sport in the Amajuba District.” Cllr Dr Ngubane elucidates that he firmly believes sport, arts and culture have the potential to change lives for the better and bring people together. With this in mind, he said, “Therefore, I urge you to share your stories of how sport, arts and culture changed your life or the life of another.”
Among the awards recipients were the likes of the late Sizwe Motaung, who played football at the highest level, Fani Madida and Dennis Maduna of Boxing. In addition, Lucas Sithole, who played Wheelchair Tennis internationally and Sam Tshabalala from the Golfing world were acknowledged.
UMtwana Thembi also attended the Awards from the Zulu Royal house, receiving the Lifetime Achiever’s Award for her role in developing and promoting the Reed Dance and other cultural events within the Amajuba District.
