Extensive development is currently underway with the KZN MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Sipho Hlomuka, launching the multi-million Rand, Water and Sanitation Project in Newcastle KZN, alongside the Newcastle Mayor, Cllr Dr Ntuthuki Mahlaba.
On Friday morning, 14 May 2021, joined by a delegation from KZN COGTA and Municipal officials—MEC Hlomuka and Cllr Dr Mahlaba, performed a walkabout at the Madadeni Water Treatment Works. The purpose, following up on the expansion project, set to provide a boost in the rollout of water and sanitation infrastructure in the townships of Madadeni and Osizweni.
The bill on the expansion project totals up to a hefty R69 million but is set to make a notable difference in the lives of those living in the area.
According to KZN COGTA, the project, which, when complete, will result in water and sanitation services being supplied to hundreds of households in Osizweni—has been hailed as a ground-breaking initiative aimed at improving the state of water and sanitation infrastructure within the township. The expansion project stems from the increasing pressure placed on the current water treatment works infrastructure. Additionally, through upgrading the facility, Cllr Dr Mahlaba emphasises the upgrade allows for further housing development in the foreseeable future.
Funding for the project was supplied through municipal social grants by KZN Cogta, with the completion date earmarked for June 2023. Furthermore, a total of 260 ablution facilities were built in Osizweni.
KZN Cogta, under the leadership of MEC Hlomuka, invested millions in this project which has now been completed, bringing dignity to the local residents. Adding to this, the department also invested millions of Rands in the expansion of the Osizweni Water Treatment Plant, currently undergoing a reconstruction phase, thereby securing the future of the municipality’s sanitation capacity.
Visiting the Madadeni Water Treatment Works Expansion Project and two families who benefited from the ablution facilities in Osizweni, MEC Hlomuka said, “KZN Cogta will try and assist where we can, and support local municipalities.”
However, he pointed out that site visits such as Friday’s one, were essential and commended the Newcastle Municipality for their efforts. He explained that the reason for this was to ensure the monies invested in the project were being used accordingly and not misused.
