Emergency personnel search for two people, after taxi swept away by raging water

Tragedy struck on Saturday, 27 March 2021, when a taxi was swept away by raging waters while crossing a low-lying bridge in Weenen.

According to reports, the taxi was travelling from Weenen to Phofeni (Mngwenya area) in the Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality.

During the fatal incident, 13 people escaped the vehicle, making their way to safety, while a 40-year-old woman drowned, and three others went missing.

Disaster Management teams immediately responded and began working non-stop to locate the missing people, who are believed to be from one family.

According to teams who responded, it was confirmed that two teenagers and an adult were unaccounted for, and it is believed they were swept away by the intense waters. With the rescue teams working around the clock, the body of one of the missing people was found on Monday, 29 March 2021. However, emergency personnel are still searching for the remaining missing two people today, 30 March 2021.

KZN MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Sipho Hlomuka has expressed his concern about the loss of life that the province continues to experience due to inclement weather conditions. He emphasises, “We are saddened by this latest incident. Our teams are working round the clock in conjunction with the police search and rescue teams to locate the missing.”

The bodies that have been recovered are those of Sazi Chonco and Zama Ziqubu. The two people who are still missing are Nompilo Ziqubu and Nomonde Mkhize.
