Manscaping can lead to some nerve-wracking injuries, and no guy wants to experience, “the accidental slip” resulting in high pitched screams and bloody bits of Australian gold (toilet paper) all over the show.
It also does not help that a study by Jama Dermatology shows that most pubic-shaving related incidents include the scrotum.
With this in mind, let us not beat around the bush but rather look at how you can manscape without injuring your more sensitive bits and pieces.
It should be noted; it is vital to avoid using the same razor you use for your face, simply because different bacteria are found on both your face and scrotum. Therefore, it is imperative to have something designated for the task on hand.
An electric clipper or safety razor is recommended. An electric trimmer will cut the hair closer to the skin, without breaking the surface, ensuring you can get the appearance and feeling of smoothness. A safety razor will diminish skin dragging and tackle the shave at hand with a single blade.
Prepping your genitals:
Trimming your hair
For a good trim:
- Stand with one of your legs propped up on a robust surface. This can be a stool or the side of your bathtub.
- Use one hand to pull the skin of your scrotum gently, so it is tight. Then use your other to trim the hair using an electric trimmer or scissors carefully.
- Be sure to trim the hairs as short as possible, without actually touching the skin.
Soak your scrotum in warm water.
A warm bath or shower can help soften the remaining stubble, thereby opening your pores for more manageable hair removal. It also helps your scrotum to relax and hang loose. This, in turn, will make it easier for you to move around while you shave.
Apply a skin-friendly shaving product.
Using a gentle shaving cream or gel containing a naturally soothing ingredient such as aloe vera, will help your blade glide over the skin without unnecessary friction.
When shopping, look for products which create a clear lather. This will can make it easier to see what you are doing.
While there are no numerous shaving products for the male nether regions, you can use face shaving creams. Just make sure the ingredients are gentle. You will want to avoid products containing “cooling” ingredients such as menthol and eucalyptus, for the obvious reasons.
Getting down to shaving.
Now that you have prepped yourself, trimming down the hair and lathering your scrotum up for the blade, it is finally time to start shaving. Here is what you need to do:
- Stand near the tub or a stool, propping one leg up as needed to reach every part of your scrotum.
- Use one hand to pull the skin gently, so it is tense.
- Use slow strokes and moderate pressure to shave in the direction of hair growth.
- Using warm water, rinse your now smooth “gentlemen” after shaving.
- Gently pat your scrotum dry.
Aftercare
To soother the skin and prevent irritation and bumps, apply a gentle balm or oil to the skin. It should be noted, look for a product with soothing ingredients like aloe. Refrain from and stay away from products which contain ingredients like alcohol or menthol, as this will sting.
With these tips and FAQs answered, you can ensure you minimise the chances of nicks and cuts. But it is advised to keep your First Aid Kit in hand, for just in case.
