The year has been one which through no choice of our own changed how we see the world, engage with people and most importantly, value life. Now at the close of 2020, offering some sound advice and wishes, we spoke to five medical professionals from Mediclinic Newcastle—this is what they have to say to you.
Heather Govere, Patient Safety Manager

Reflecting on the year, Govere begins, “It has been a tough year, but it is going to get tougher, as we prepare for the second surge.”
With this in mind, Govere reminds the community, “Keep safe, practise social distancing, avoid large gathering and act responsibly when you feel sick by staying away from others. I would also like to wish people, a Happy New Year and a Merry Christmas.”
Dr Yvonne Combrinck, Nursing Manager

As 2020 prepares to take the exit, Dr Combrinck states, “I trust what lies ahead will be far better than what we are leaving behind. We have to remember that pandemics do not last forever and that this too shall pass. I hope we will find some quiet time to come to terms with what we had to endure during this year.”
Additionally, Dr Combrinck adds she hopes Newcastillians spends the festive season being responsible and remain healthy. She concludes, “May our homes be filled with love and peace abundantly. Take care, stay safe and be blessed.
Dr Zenzele Mthethwa

Looking at 2020, Dr Mthethwa says, “It has been a tough year, especially going through this pandemic, both as a community and a nation.”
With the festive season rapidly approaching, he adds, “I would like to wish the community a happy Christmas, a healthy holiday and remember to follow the safety measures.”
Dr Ebrahim Vahed

With families and friends planning social get-togethers, Dr Ebrahim Vahed says it is essential to remember a simple adage this holiday season. “Handwashing, social distancing, mask up and live life to its fullest potential. Have a happy holiday and an awesome 2021.”
Dr Siyabonga Sonjani

After enduring months in lockdown and a wearisome pandemic, Dr Sonjani says, “It is that time of the year again, in a year that has had a bad effect on the country, in terms of both people’s health and the economy. Please don’t let your guard down, stay safe, and follow the precautions.” While urging the community to stay safe, he concludes, “I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year.”
