For many South Africans, Level 3 of the nationwide lockdown offers a sense of relief. Not only does it allow more freedom of movement, but it also allows several people to return to work.
However, during this time, adhering to the necessary health regulations becomes vital to curb the spread of the virus.
With liquor stores reopening on June 1, MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs Nomusa Dube-Ncube explained the KZN Liquor Authority has proactively notified licensed premises about Regulations governing the sale of alcohol during COVID-19 Level 3.
With several regulations set in place for licensed liquor holders, Dube-Ncube emphasised that a team of inspectors from KZN Liquor Authority, Department of Employment and Labour and law enforcement agencies will be making unannounced visits to licensed premises. This is to monitor their compliance with regulations.

This process began on Tuesday, June 2, with Newcastle Municipality officials joining forces police officers, KZN Liquor Authority officials and representatives from the Department for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs.
The team visited local liquor license holders, ensuring they are adhering to the regulations. These regulations include:
- The sale of liquor in licensed premises will only be allowed from Mondays to Thursdays. Their operating times will be from 9am until 5pm.
- The consumption of liquor will not be permitted on the premises.
- All patrons entering the licensed premises must be screened. Those who show a high temperature of 37 and more should not be allowed inside.
- All persons inside the premises must wear the prescribed masks, covering both their mouth and nose.
The operation ran relatively smoothly, with licensed liquor holders attempting to follow the regulations to the best of their abilities.
Well done to all the licensed liquor holders who were found complying to the regulations.
