Christmas Day, what does it mean to you? The Newcastillian asks residents

A festive air prevails over the land, with scores of families celebrating Christmas. It is a time of year, where Christmas trees and other decorations add a festive flair to homes and stores, with Christmas carols creating a vibrant mood.

With Christians celebrating the day which signifies the birth of Jesus Christ, who is believed to be the promised messiah, Christmas Day has become a popular day across various cultures. People from all walks of life embracing the season of giving.

As Newcastle celebrates Christmas, the Newcastillian has asked residents what Christmas means to them and this is what they have to say:

Sibongile Mbatha

“For me, it is all about spending time with family. I don’t believe it is about spending money, but rather spending quality time with your family and other loved ones.”

Mariska Booysen-Louw

“Christmas means family time for me. It is about spending quality time, playing games and loads of food on the table. It is not the presents that are important, but rather who you spend quality time with.”

Melanie van der Westhuizen

“Christmas is family time. But it is also a celebration/feast and birthday of Jesus Christ.”

Manqoba Magangane

“Christmas means a lot to me. It is that time of the year, where you can enjoy a gathering of your friends and family, spending much-needed quality time together.”

Jonathan Raghoo

“I think people often get too caught up with the rush and the idea of getting gifts, becoming distracted with the true meaning of Christmas. For me, Christmas is more than getting gifts. It is about reaching out and giving to others. The Lord blessed us with His son, which is why giving to others during this time is so important.”

As families celebrate Christmas today, what does the day mean to you? Share your views and thoughts with us in the comment section below.
