Technology is constantly evolving, developing and changing the way we see the world. However, can innovations such as drone technology enhance KwaZulu-Natal’s economy?
MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, Nomusa Dube-Ncube believes drone technology can assist in economic development.
During her keynote address at the DroneCon 2019 conference in Durban, Dube-Ncube expressed her views on drone technology and its role in driving economic growth, reducing business costs and enhancing competitiveness.
Addressing attendants at the event, she explained one of KZN’s provincial government’s priorities was to build modern infrastructure, especially in transportation and logistics.
This is due to the provincial government viewing the transport and aviation sectors as critical in job creation.
Wanting to see young people trained in drone piloting and drone manufacturing, Dube-Ncube says the provincial government is also keen to see drone technology driving the maritime industry.
Through people being skilled and trained in drone technology, they can monitor the province’s extensive coastline ports.
This follows the provincial government learning about the experimental programme called LOCUST (Low-Cost UAV Swarming Technology). LOCUST provides sailors and mariners with a pivotal tactical advantage.
In this regard, Dube-Ncube says the government is keen to know the possibility of using drone technology to address the concerns raised by port users.
She explains that the provincial government is also looking at the possibility of cargo drones, as it will be cheaper, safer and more efficient.
The MEC says she imagines a future where drones can improve service delivery, as they can deliver medical supplies to rural clinics, hospitals and other community centres in KZN.
Other areas where drones can improve productivity, include agriculture, for weeding fields, applying fertilisers, to patrol farms to reduce livestock theft and to strengthen anti-poaching efforts.
