Runners take on the daunting Amajuba Marathon

Waking up at the crack of dawn on Sunday morning, September 22, 205 runners made their way to the old Monte Vista Casino. Shirking off the comfort of their beds in exchange for their running shoes.

Participating in the third annual Amajuba Marathon, the runners had the opportunity to participate in either the 10km division, the 21.1km division or the daunting 42km division.

With the weather conditions proving to be ideal, the participants took the morning in their stride, competing against themselves and their fellow runners.

In the 10km men’s division, Sipho Hlatshwayo came in first place with a time of 00:33:18, with Nkosinathi Sibiya taking second place with a time of 00:33:30 and Thato Rampa in third place with a time of 00:33:31.

Siyabonga Ndlovu took the win in the 10km men’s junior division with a time of 00:35:33. He was followed by Tshiano Maribe in second place with a time of 00:33:49 and Sandakahle Khumalo in third place with a time of 00:37:37.

In the 21.1km men’s division, Bongumusa Mavuso clinched the first position with a time of 1::12:09. Taking the second position was Sphamandla Nyembe with a time of 1:14:23 and in the third position was Ncedisani Phungula with a time of 1:16:44.

Thobile Mkhize secured her victory in the 21.1km women’s division with a time of 1:29:27. Taking the second position is Beatrice Hlope with a time of 1:45:17 and she was followed by Jo Claassen with a time of 1:50:51.

Siboniso Sikhakhane clinched the win in the daunting 42km men’s division with an impressive time of 2:28:33. He was followed by Malibongwe Dlamini in the second position with a time of 2:33:36. In the third spot was Vumani Mlaba with a time of 2:34:47.

In the 42km women’s division, the win goes to Phezile Shabangu with a time of 3:40:17. Followed by Zethui Mnyandu in second place with a time of 4:28:51. Securing her time in the third position is Sindisiwe Jali with a time of 5:02:50.
