
How safe are you as a South African from being murdered? In fact, how safe are you from murder in KwaZulu-Natal?
The recent crime stats released by which Police Minister Bheki Cele and National police commissioner Khehla Sitole and his team in parliament on Thursday, September 12, paints a terrifying picture.
According to the stats, a staggering 21 022 murder cases were reported from 1 April 2018 to 31 March 2019 period, compared to the 2017/2018 period’s where 20 336 cases were reported.
This means South Africa’s murder rate has increased by 3.4%, with approximately 57 people murdered daily.
With the high murder figures in South Africa, three police stations from KZN have made it in the top 10 list for murders in the country.
According to the crime statistics, Inanda takes the fourth position among the top 10, with the highest rate of murder in KZN. The station reported 209 murders during the 2018/2019 period, six more cases than the 2017/2018 period.
In the seventh position is Umlazi with 180 murders, which is 43 fewer murders than the previous year. Then, in ninth place is Plessislaer reporting 166 murders. This is 62 more murders than the previous year.
Despite these figures, Newcastle saw a decrease in murder cases during the allocated time period, dropping from last year’s 19 cases to 15 cases.
Madadeni has also seen a substantial drop in murder cases, with the figure sitting at 39 cases over last year’s 53 cases. However, oSizweni has seen an increase in murder cases during the 2018/2019 period, with the figure rising to 57 cases over last year’s 53 cases.
Ladysmith has also seen an increase in murders, with 46 murders over last year’s 40 reported cases. Dundee also sees an increase in murder cases, going up from 17 murders to 21 cases. Dannhauser, however, has seen a decrease in murders with 12 reported cases over last year’s 19 cases.
