A security guard from Tongaat is facing police charges after allegedly shooting himself in the leg on Sunday, August 25.

The incident took place at a taxi rank in the Tongaat CBD. Spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele says Tongaat police were called to a shooting at the rank. Upon responding, the police found the rank guard with a gunshot wound to the leg.

Mbele says it is alleged that the security guard accidentally shot himself with a rifle.

While taken to the hospital to receive medical assistance, he will be charged for discharging a firearm in public and negligent when handling a firearm. The rifle was also confiscated for further investigation and the security guard will be appearing in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court.
