As one of the most iconic leaders in the world, Mandela is known around the globe for his strong character, moral fibre and his love for his country.
Born on 18 July 1918, Nelson Mandela spent 67 years of his life fighting for social justice. Becoming the first black South African president in May 1994.
Through his life’s work, he has become a household name by millions of people and it is because of his life’s work that the United Nations officially declared July 18 as Nelson Mandela International Day or Mandela Day.
What does Mandela Day mean?
July 18 is a day where people pay tribute to Mandela’s legacy and his values, through volunteering and community service.
Therefore, Mandela Day is a global call to action which celebrates the idea that a person has the power to change the world.
Because Madiba dedicated 67 years of his life to social justice, on Mandela Day, people are encouraged to do 67 minutes of community and volunteer work.
It is an initiative which brings people together from different backgrounds and cultures, in order to fight poverty, promote peace, reconciliation and cultural diversity.
