Are car thieves and hijackers becoming more creative in their quest to steal motor vehicles? As a country who terrifyingly sees on average 45 hijackings a day, we are now seeing a new tactic being used.
This comes after reports of a new trend making its way into the crime world, where a magnet is being used.
“This seems to be a new trend to hijack cars. They put a magnet on your brake disk and when driving, it makes a huge noise. Giving the perception there is a problem with your car. When you stop and get out to see check what’s the problem, they attack you,” says Newcastle SAPS spokesperson, Captain Jabulani Ncube.
Following this warning, Newcastle Visible Policing arrested one person on Tuesday, June 4, for being in possession of a stolen vehicle. The Toyota Tazz was stolen in Johannesburg before the suspect was found with it in Newcastle.
In another incident, the Amajuba Cluster Task team found an abandoned Mazda in Madadeni. Investigations are currently underway to determine whether the vehicle is stolen or not.
Following the recovery of the abandoned vehicle, the Newcastle Visible Policing Unit arrested two men for drug possession. This comes during a crime prevention operation held by the unit in the Newcastle CBD.
A staggering 61 slopes of dagga and seven parcels of heroin were seized from the two suspects.
Captain Ncube commends the officers involved in the arrests, as they pursue creating a crime-free society.
