A level of excitement filled the air whilst sportsmanship and camaraderie prevailed at the annual Utrecht Nashua Sports Week, which took place from March 12 to March 15.
An impressive 15 schools attended the 17th annual sports week, with 14 rugby teams, 9 netball teams and 15 hockey teams (which consisted of 10 girl teams and 5 boy teams.)
With an excellent turnout, this year’s event saw a record-breaking number of teams, players and officials, which were all motivated and ready for the upcoming season over the three days.
During the duration of the tournament, the following learners were awarded for an array of accolades.
Miss Sports Week is Phiwokuhle Ngobese of DJS, while Mr Sports Week goes to Xaxsan Saraiva from Grantham Park.
In the Tug of War, the hockey girls of Grantham Park and the netball girls of Veldenvlei were named winners respectively. Pelham triumphed with great joy in the boys’ division.
Adding to the festivities, the “colour burst” provided a kaleidoscope of beauty and carefree moments; as 25 kilograms of colour powder brightened up the event, bringing that extra something special to the tournament.
The following players were also acknowledged for their performance in the divisions of their respective sports:
Netball: Amahle Mbatha from Veldenvlei and Lesego Mogale of Leandra.
Hockey girls: Andiswa Myoka of Greytown and Rochelle Fuhri from Utrecht.
Hockey boys: Ehsan Amad of Huttenpark and Theo Fakude from T.P. Stratten.
Rugby: Vuyo Ndebele of Greytown and Banele Dlamini from Pelham.
