A new era of trail running has begun, with the establishment of the Zama Trail Run Series.

Created by Newcastle Harriers, the Zama Trail Run Series is the ideal event for outdoor and nature enthusiasts, as well as avid fitness enthusiasts.

While the project is aimed at promoting trail running, there is a much richer significance to the upcoming event. Under the theme of the Boer, the Brit & the Zulu, the event celebrates the rich history and diverse culture in the greater Newcastle area.

The series will take place over three dates, at three different areas. Each set in the picturesque mountains surrounding the town. Whether young or old, experienced or novice, all trail runners are invited to participate in the Zama Trail Run Series.

“The idea of the project is to create a sense of harmony between the various running groups, while introducing trail running to the community. It is also about giving the community the opportunity to socialise with others, form friendships and experience sportsmanship,” says Chris van der Linde of Newcastle Harriers.

The first leg of the Zama Trail Run Series will take place at Horse Shoe Farm on May 5. This will see participants running up the Normandien pass (a climb close on 800m in 11km). A gravel route with a lot of twist and turns and beautiful scenery of the pass and neighbouring farms. This is not a technical run as it is staged on a district road, however, the uphill is a challenge of note.

The second event is staged at the beginning of August at AJD Meats, the route is a single trail through farmlands up a mountain pass into the foothills of the Drakensburg on the edge of the escarpment.

The final trail run will be held at Vulintaba Country Estate. This trail will be run on the Black route known for its tough ascents and descents. Along the route runners will view the magnificent amphitheatre.

Each race has two distances. There will be a short fun distance, which will still be moderately challenging, as well as longer and tougher route for the more experienced trail runner.

There is also a staggering R21 000 in prize money in the series, for those who are willing to go the full distance in the series. This means R7 000 in prize money will be up for grabs during each event.

The first prize will be R2 000 for both the men and women’s division. Second prize will be R1 000 and third prize for both women and men’s division will be R500.

While the Zama Trail Run Series is aimed at introducing the community to trail running, the Newcastle Harriers will be running another project within the series.

“With the backing of Zama Retailers we’re launching Enroute to Comrades 2020. This programme will support five local runners to run the iconic Comrades Marathon in 2020. Our goal is to develop & grow the sport in our district” says Chris.

The first step in developing local runners will be Zama Retailers’ sponsorship of 20 entries  and race day t-shirts to the Zama Trail Run Series. On top of this, Triathlon Cycles will give a 20% discount on supplements.

Out of the selected 20 runners, a further five will be selected for the Comrades Marathon 2020. These five runners will be sponsored entry to the race, as well as monthly financial support of R1 000 as of November 1 up to the race. Each will receive a new pair of running shoes and a financial contribution towards transport and accommodation at the Comrades. They will also receive a further 20% discount off supplements from Triathlon Cycles.

With the main sponsors being Zama Retailers, joined by co-sponsors AJD Meats, Horseshoe Farm, Vulintaba Country Estate and TRIVS Medical Services, the Zama Trail Running Series is to create a platform for novice and experienced runners alike. Taking them to new heights, while giving them the opportunity to experience the fellowship of sports.
