A celebratory atmosphere surges through Drakensberg Primary school, as learners gather on the sports grounds.
Today, January 18, marks a special occasion. It is the school principal, Pieter Hanekom’s birthday. For the learners at the school, he is more than an individual who steers the school. He is an educator, a source of comfort and a person who truly cares about each child at the school.

To celebrate his birthday, Mr Hanekom was treated with a helicopter ride with Alan Wilson, who took him for a ride over Newcastle. Starting from Grey Goose Game Lodge and landing at Drakensberg Primary School, where Mr Hanekom received another surprise.

Learners from the school formed his age on the sport grounds, followed by them singing him happy birthday.

The helicopter landing at the school was greeted with a great deal of excitement by the learners. For many children, this is the closest they have been to chopper. Making it a special occasion for them as well.

Following Mr Hanekom blowing out candles on his cake, learners were treated to ice cream.
Between the excitement of seeing a helicopter landing in the school grounds, and enjoying ice cream at school, Mr Hannekom’s birthday celebrations truly got children into the weekend spirit.
Pixelfish Marketing and The Newcastillian extends its birthday wishes to Mr Hanekom. All the best for your birthday and may you continue leading Drakensberg Primary School from strength to strength.
