Christmas is one of the most celebrated days around the world, as a religious and cultural celebration by Christians and non-Christians.
While Christmas Day is a public holiday in many nations, what is the true significance of the day? Why is it so important for Christians?
Christmas is the annual celebration commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ.
The traditional Christmas narrative, the Nativity of Jesus, comes from the Christian Bible’s New Testament which says Jesus the son of God was born in Bethlehem, in accordance with messianic prophecies.
When Joseph and Mary arrived in the city, the inn had no room and so they were offered a stable. It is in the stable where Jesus was born. Angels proclaiming this news to shepherds who then further disseminated the information.
As Jesus is seen as the Messiah who was born to save mankind from their sin, forming a closer bond with God, Christmas Day marks the first step in the Christian belief where God came down to mankind. Willing to sacrifice everything for the well-being of their souls.
While focusing on Jesus’s birth, Christmas celebrations have evolved throughout the years.
Popular modern customs of the holiday include exchanging gifts, completing an Advent calendar, Christmas music and carolling, but to name a few. There is also viewing a Nativity play, exchanging Christmas cards and church services. Let’s not forget sharing a special meal with family and friends.
As people gather today to celebrate Christmas, the Newcastillian wishes all its readers a blessed day. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.
