Ho, Ho..no. Are criminals preparing for the festive season?

It is holiday time and South Africans are preparing to hit the beaches, mountains and everything in between.

Scores of Newcastillians are prepping for the holiday season. Whether they are getting ready to go on holiday or planning to unwind at home with family and friends, there is very little to worry about at the moment.

However, it seems that something sinister is afoot. It seems the criminal element is taking advantage of the prevailing festive spirit and people’s relaxed behaviour. So much so, that Captain Jabulani Ncube, Newcastle SAPS spokesperson, says the police in KwaZulu-Natal are encouraging people to be vigilant.

“This warning comes after reported incidents in the province, where criminals gained entrance into properties under false pretences and robbed the occupants.”

Don’t let strangers into your property or home.

Captain Ncube explains these dastardly fiends will arrive at an individual’s house, clad in blue workwear. They then pretend to be general workers sent to repair an array of non-existent problems. “When the victims open the gate, they are then robbed of their valuables.”

With criminals becoming more brazen during the festive season, the SAPS feel it is paramount that the community be at the ready in case of emergencies.

“The community needs to be cautious and alert at all times. Do not let the strangers into your home. If someone comes to your home, ask for identity document or work identification card as proof of employment,” Captain Ncube explains.

But this is not the only way criminals are targeting unsuspecting victims.

Captain Ncube says there is another trend, where law-breakers arrive at a person’s house in a luxury vehicle. Parking outside the homeowner’s house, they will hoot at the gates. “Most often the owners never check before opening the gates. Criminals are employing this modus operandi as they are aware that most residents are very lax.”

With Newcastillians encouraged to be vigilant, if one does fall victim to crime, Captain Ncube encourages residents to contact the SAPS as soon as possible.

By practising caution this festive season, you can ensure the chances of being targeted by criminals are minimised.
