Will you be a hero this holiday season? Will you donate a pint of blood?

Heroes light up the cinematic world and the comicverse with their abilities. Striving to create a better world for all, these heroes sacrifice their own needs for the greater good.

However, not all heroes wear capes. Neither do they all have superpowers. There are heroes who can save lives, one pint of blood at a time.

The South African National Blood Services (SANBS) is facing a shortage of blood, both in KZN and other parts of the country. With South Africans bracing themselves for the holiday season, the need for blood donations is pivotal.

SANBS provincial spokesperson, Sifiso Khoza explains that provincially, KZN is on 24-hour reserve. The blood supply nationally stands on 48-hour reserve. These are frightening figures, considering the collisions which take place this time of year. A period where blood supply is critical.

By donating blood, you can make a difference in not just one person’s life. One unit of blood can save three lives. This means, by simply giving up 30 minutes of your time, you can save a family from a lifetime of trauma. Your blood can give someone a second chance in life. An opportunity for a child to reach their full potential.

What are the minimum requirements to donate blood?

You must be:

  • 50 kilograms or over.
  • Between the ages of 16 and 65.
  • Be in good health
  • Lead a sexually safe lifestyle
  • Consider your blood safe for transfusion

Newcastle SANBS is planning to hold blood clinics throughout the December period and making it easier for the community to donate blood.

Shavani Sewpaul, Donor Relations Practitioner, claims Newcastillians can look out for the SANBS at the following venues in December:

The Village Walk on December 3, December 11, December 18 and December 24.
