Diwali, the festival of lights, is one of the most popular festivals in Hinduism. An auspicious day filled with rich significance and history.
Diwali symbolises the victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. It is a period of time where mankind is reminded of the importance of pursuing a righteous life.
Lighting the way to a special day, Hindu Newcastillians participated in the annual Diwali Show on Saturday, October 20.
A day filled with spiritual meaning, dancing, religious sketches and songs.
Popular Pakistani singer, Imran Ashram, who performed on Zee TV, as well as Mahandra Shamaparsadh from Ladysmith, both put on a lively show for guests.

Chairman of the Diwali Show committee, Ishwar Singh, explains this marks the 40th year of the show’s existence. Making it one of the most popular events on Newcastle’s religious calendar.

Diwali will occur on November 7. A time where Hindus all around the globe will celebrate the special time by dressing in their finest clothes, lighting up lamps and candles inside and outside their homes, while offering prayers to Lakshmi the goddess of prosperity.
Lighting up fireworks, as well as taking part in family meals, and the exchanging of sweets and gifts also forms a big part of the day.
During the Diwali time period, temples, homes, shops and offices are brightly illuminated. The preparation and rituals for Diwali typically last a period of five days. The climax taking place on the third day, coinciding with the darkest night of the Hindu Luni-Solar Month, Kartika. The festival usually takes place in October or November in the Gregorian calendar.
The Diwali Show was well supported and enjoyed by one and all.
