Known around the globe as the Rainbow Nation, South Africa is a culturally diverse country. South Africa’s people follow an array of different beliefs and traditions. Each belonging to their own unique culture.
But at our core, we are all South Africans. A people unified in embracing both our own and our neighbour’s culture. As we celebrate Heritage Day today, September 24, many of us take the time to dress in cultural attire. Taking the time to remember not only our ancestors but to remember where our roots lay and that we all belong to something bigger than ourselves.
In preparation for Heritage Day, St Dominics Newcastle and Drakensberg Primary School took the time to celebrate the special day on Friday, September 21.
At St Dominics Newcastle, learners and staff dressed in cultural wear. A formal assembly was also held where students presented various cultural items such as dances, songs and poems. Furthermore, each class had an opportunity to present a cultural food of their choice.

Drakensberg Primary School learners also dressed up for the day, with the Grade 2s also adding cultural food to the mix.

With a sense of cultural heritage, the learners from both schools had an entertaining Friday. Welcoming the long weekend with smiles on their faces and having learned something new about their friend’s culture.
